Evaluation

Evaluation

My magazine cover conforms to the typical conventions of magazine design as i have tried to follow the conventions of other magazine covers. i have given it a masthead called 'College Life' within that i have included a skyline, offering a free voucher for the starbucks in the wicked, i have also included issue number, issue date and have included the barcode. I have got puffs, coverlines and a price in there. I have even introduced a website along with the facebook and twitter links.

My contents page conforms to the typical conventions of magazine design, i have created this using conventions such as, page numbers, images, sub headings, information, i forgot to include the page number of the contents page itself. i have put the date and issue number of the magazine in there again this time and bit bigger and bolder incase the audience missed it on the front cover. I have a feature article however i have not made it stand out above the articles which i shall introduce for the music magazine.

Young people in my magazine are portrayed as beings quite fashionable, as you can see from image of Aiden, they were also portrayed as being quite musical. the image of sam shows him holding a music theory book. The image of aiden is him playing the piano.

my final images are different from my sketches in the sense that it is a closer long shot than i originally planned, which is a good thing because i drew the image too far away from the what i would have liked it to look like on the image.

I have gone from knowing next to nothing at all about the technologies like photoshop and qwark to knowing how to edit the pictures, cutting them out, crating shapes, editing the fonts. on qwark i have learnt how to reduce the quality of images to fit them in the space that i needed to. and i have also learnt how to import. overall i have a much better understanding of these two programs and i will continue to learn until i need it for the music magazine.

Final cover and contents page

Photo shop and quark editing

My cover and contents sketch and planning notes

The Masthead of my magazine cover is the title of my magazine which is called 'College Life'. The magazine will be about the what is going on in the life of college and will show what is going on in college. I have used cover lines that are going to tell the reader what they can find inside of the magazine itself and what it has to offer. This will hopefully draw the readers attention.

I am going to lay out my contents page in order with similar topics, the page number this way may not be in order however it will be easier to find a certain article you may be looking for if you look for the article.
The feature article will have a larger image than the rest of the images because it is the main article to try to attract the readers attention. i will have the issue date, number and the page number in the contents page. i will also give basic detail of what will be shown on each page on each topic that the reader may want to read just a bit of a taster for them.

Magazine front cover conventions

Conventions
Conventions are repeated and recognisable elements of a media text. It helps the audience to define exactly what it is.
Conventions are like ingredients for Media (you have to include them all for it to create what you want it to)

Masthead:
-Title
-Located at the top of the cover

Main image:
-Long shot
-Medium shot
-Close shot

Cover Lines:
Cover lines tell you exactly what is going to be inside the magazine (without giving too much information to 'spoil' the magzines for the readers.

They normally have images of famous people on the front cover

Barcodes

Back grounds
images used
layout
visual look or style
stars/icons
colours
themes
issue information
content
housestyle (magazines own style)
type face
written language
puffs
barcode
cover lines
masthead

Company magazine

-Bold masthead at the top
-Barcode
-coverlines
-website
-image
-icons
-layout
-visual look/style
-Brand so established that people will still know the company even if the models head (in this case florence) covers part of the title
-plain background
-main image
-always look directly into the camera.

GQ (Gentlemans Quarterly)

-Mast head
-Blank background so everything on the page stands out
-Coverlines
-Medium/long shot
-Kobe Bryant covering the mast head slightly which shows that the main image is more important than the magazine and that the company is so established that people still know the magazine.
Smart clothing (mens suit suggests that the magazine is the aimed at an audience of sophisticated men or people who may aspire to be sophisticated.)
-Barcode in the right.
-Plain background

NME
-Colourful background
-More to the image than just Morrissey
-Masthead
-Coverlines
-barcode at the bottom right of the page (as is the same for most magazines)
-Laid back image of Morrissey showing that he is easy going
-Fonts are the same throughout the cover (unique style for NME)
-Layout

CLOSER
-Masthead
-cover lines
-skyline
-sub headings
-bullet points
-barcode
-puffs
-messy layout
-star images

Good Housekeeping

-Information packed
-masthead
-barcode
-covers masthead
-company so established that the masthead can be covered and the audience will still know what it is.
-the layout will always be similar to other issues of the magazine
-this magazine will most probably attract an older audience
-This magazine is also mainly for women
-The fonts of this cover have all sorts of different fonts (which doesn't really follow any type of house style).
-Cover lines
-Purple background

All though all these magazine covers are very different they are also very alike with the conventions that they all have, they all have a masthead which shows the title of the magazine, they all have cover lines to show us what type of things or topics will be published within the magazine. They will all have sub heading which are normally the titles of the coverlines. they all need a barcode for them to be able to be sold other wise shop keepers wouldn't know how much they are selling them for. They almost all have a Main image that is normally a well know famous person. whether its an actor or a sports person to even a business person they will all have one. Most often it will be that the mast heads are being obscured by the person in the main image which shows that the magaizne is so well established that people will still know the magazine, either by the part of the title that they can see or the house style.

Contents convetions

-Masthead
-Whats on each page
-Images
-Layout
-Background
-Puffs
-Images
-Images relate to stories
-Don't show every page number
-Numerous images
-Atticle titles
-Articles description
-Information - postioning
-House style
-Wont have the same font as the title that that for information
-Simple style
-Text in columns
-Grouped in to sections of similar content - Navigation
-Larger images for feature articles

These conventions will help the readers to navigate the exact page that they want to find for the articles that they may be interested in, the layout of the contents of magazines are normally simply laidout so it is easy to read and there isn't anything obscuring the text. they will include a date that the issue of the magazine was released. the images of the people in the magazine will show who the people are if the readers don't recognise them by name but do by face.

  • "Contents"
  • coverlines
  • images
  • layout
  • housestyle
  • numerous images
  • information is all either under the pictures or to the right side of the contents page
  • it doesnt show every number
  • image of stars
  • whats on each page which make navigation easier
  • text mainly in a column
  • larger image for the feature articles
The conventions that are used in this are very house style based, the colours used around the font and for the font are very typicle in the kerrang magazines, if you were to look at most of the other kerrang magazines then you would see that the same fonts and colours were used most of the time. The layout of the page is also very commonly used throught the kerrang magazines which is however unique to every other magazine which is the same for any magazine, they will all most likely have a unique house style that they will constantly use. the image of the stars are shown tend to be quite close up.
